How to write quick and easy thank you notes

December 26, 2008

It’s time to give thanks for all the presents that were under the tree.  Even if you thanked the gift-giver in person, it’s a show of excellent manners and appreciation to follow up with a handwritten note.

Don’t fret - thank you notes needn’t be excruciating to write.  In fact, there’s a really simple formula to make writing them painless.  Write quick and easy thank you notes by following these easy steps:

  1. First, write “thank you for the [insert gift here].”
  2. If the gift was money, don’t write in the note the amount given to you.  Simply say the gift was “generous.”
2b. Include a sentence on how you’ll spend the money, if you know.
  3. For non-cash gifts, you still might want to say how generous the giver was and how you weren’t expecting anything (even if you were expecting something).
  4. Close your thank you note with a “thanks again,” and sign your name.

And voila!  You’re finished!  Your gift-giver will feel like you truly appreciate the time, effort, and money they spent on you.  If you follow these easy guidelines, your thank you note might read something like this:

Dear Aunt Michelle,

Thank you so much for the gift card to Banana Republic!  It was very generous of you to think of me.  There is a coat I’ve had my eye on, and now I’ll be able to get it!  Thank you again.

Love,

Suzie
