Using my network to help me get things done

January 9, 2009

You probably don’t know that in addition to Hi, Society!, I have a design company - Element K Creative.  That’s probably because Element K doesn’t have a website.

Yet.

I’ve been able to put Element K’s website off this long because projects come in pretty steadily by referral, which is always great, plus I took a little time off to launch Hi, Society! Design Studio.  I was busy and kept saying, “I have sooo many projects to do that I don’t have time to design my own website.”

Excuses.  (And some of you know what excuses are.)

This week, I caught up with a colleague on the West Coast with whom I’d been playing phone tag for about a week.  J.  and I met at the Creative Freelancer Conference in August and immediately hit it off.  She and I have decided to be accountable to each other for following through with certain plans and practices for each of our businesses.

We’ve agreed to meet every two weeks to catch up, bounce ideas off each other, and see where we are in executing our plans.  Our next meeting is January 23rd.  She’s got her two goals; I have one major goal: Finish and launch Element K Creative’s website.

So I’m accountable to J., and now all of you can hold me to this, as well: Element K Creative’s website will launch by or on January 23rd.

Element K’s site doesn’t have to have every bell and whistle.  In fact, it won’t.  I’m not a big bell/whistle kind of girl.  My style is pretty simple, and I don’t want the site to compete with the work. The site just has to show potential clients how I can solve their creative communication challenges.  (Because that’s what I do!)

So this time around, no excuses.  I’m using my network to help me get things done.  You should, too.
