eBay obsession: Vintage suitcases
January 12, 2009Ah, eBay. It’s a treasure trove for lovers of vintage items. This summer, I fell in love with vintage suitcases - mostly American Tourister-types from the 1960s. I ended up purchasing a blue-gray round American Tourister “Tiara” suitcase from the ’60s.
The upside: It’s a classic that will always be fashionable.
The downside: It’s heavy as hell! Carrying this bad boy through the airport would probably be a nightmare. And would it fit in the overhead compartment? Doubtful. So far, I’ve only used this suitcase for short road trips, 1- or 2-night stays and the like.
Check out these delicious vintage suitcase finds:
American Tourister “Tiara” suitcase
Bid here. Or get a blue one (like the one I have) here.
Samsonite crocodile-embossed leather suitcase
This suitcase looks like it’s missing from the set of “Mad Men.” I love it.
Bid here.
Munro hatbox-style suitcase
This soft-sided hatbox style suitcase has to be much lighter than its hard-sided counterparts. Something to consider.
Bid here.
Vintage Samsonite luggage set
This set looks straight out of Miami from the 1970s, a very “Miami Vice” feel. With checked baggage fees coming out the wazoo, you wouldn’t want to take all of these to the airport. But if you can manage to take only two of the set, you’ll be fashionably on target. The medium size suitcase and train case would make a good pair for a weekend getaway.

I can understand the obsession, Kendall! Now, you will have to get obsessed about a personal valet to carry them for you:)
Maybe if I’m a good girl this whole year, Santa will bring me a a personal valet for Christmas
Wouldn’t that be lovely!
Dyana, any obsessions of your own?
I’m lucky enough to have traveled w/ my mom’s 1960s American Tourister Tiara luggage and although it’s heavy, it can take quite the beating. I’ve sat on it to get it closed when I’ve filled it with books and I never worry about how the handlers toss it around. A totally chic and worthwhile investment
Always travel in style with vintage (albeit heavy) luggage! Thank goodness for Smarte Carte!!!!!
