I decided to venture out late this afternoon.  With my new handy-dandy laptop, I headed to Flemington, NJ, to The Great Lodge, this cafe I’ve passed several times since moving here.  I was hungry - it’s dinner time - and I have work that I need to do.

I can see through the cafe windows that a band is setting up to play although the place is largely empty.  When I walk in through the door, everyone looks surprised to see me walk in.  I can see it on their faces.  They all pause.  Time stopped ever so briefly.  (more…)

I’m not used to being the “other”

I’ve just moved from Houston, TX, to a very small town in New Jersey.  Very.  Small.  (It’s so small that I don’t even want to say what town it is.)

How small is small, you ask?  It’s about 1.5 square miles big.  The closest Target and movie theater are about a 30 minute drive away.  Local restaurants are closed on Mondays.  The Walmart and grocery store down the road close at 10 p.m.  The lounge at the local Holiday Inn seems to have the most jumping nightlife.
